Candela Quadralase CO2 Laser

This carbon dioxide laser is one of the most versatile lasers. It delivers heat to vaporize and remove tissue selectively. By delivering the energy with a computer pattern generator, it can selectively treat wrinkles without damaging the underlying tissue in a treatment called resurfacing. Although the down time from this procedure is prolonged (>than 1 week), it produces the most improvement for deep wrinkles or severe acne scars with a single treatment.
The CO2 skin laser is also used to removal superficial lesions such as warts and small facial lesions called appendage tumors. Appropriate intralesional anesthesia is given prior to treatment with the CO2 laser.

Finally, using the Fractional pulsed mode, a modified beam that treats a fraction of the total skin area is available. With various density settings, one can produce a wound that causes maximum collagen shrinkage with faster wound healing. This has revolutionized CO2 laser resurfacing for scars, wrinkles and photo damaged skin.

Fractional Laser

The fractional laser works by using special lenses to produce columns of light into specific areas of the skin. The Fractional Laser by Palomar is similar to the Fraxel laser by Reliant Technologies. It has the same wavelength, but differs in the amount of energy that can be delivered and the number and density of lenses that produce columns of light effects into the dermis. These columns are surrounded by normal skin and promote quicker healing of the dermal injury. There is minimal down time since the skin is not broken and the effects are beneath the epidermis. This skin laser treats Melasma, increased pigmentation from any cause, wrinkles, photodamage, and tightens tissue in general. A series of treatments at 2-4 week intervals is often prescribed to give maximum benefits. Packages of five treatments are commonly recommended.

The GentleLASE is a safe and effective treatment for hair removal. The gentle beam of light passes through the skin causing damage to the hair follicle resulting in the removal/reduction of unwanted hair. This laser is the preferred choice for patients with lighter skin and light brown to black hair. All body areas can be treated with the GentleLASE. Side effects are rare. The laser has a cooling spray before each pulse to reduce the pain and protect the skin. Those hairs in the the growth cycle are susceptible to permanent removal. As with the other lasers, adequate sun protection is necessary between treatments. Can also be used to treat resistant Port Wine Stains.

The Gentle YAG is the perfect choice for hair removal in patients with darker skin. It safely penetrates without affecting the skin’s natural color. It can be used in patients of all skin types who have failed previous hair removal therapies.

The Gentle YAG laser penetrates deeply into the skin, which also makes it an excellent choice for the treatment of leg and facial veins.

In addition, this versatile laser offers an effective option for tighter, smoother looking skin. The skin is tightened and wrinkles are minimized. With a series of treatments and little to no down time, your skin can look fresher and rejuvenated.

Perfecta Pulsed Dye Laser

The latest generation of pulsed dye lasers from is the Perfecta. This laser targets blood vessels as well as melanin, and therefore is useful for both vascular and pigmented lesions.

For vascular lesions, this laser uses yellow light to target the hemoglobin within red blood cells. Basically, anything that is red will absorb the light energy emitted from the Perfecta Laser. Therefore, Port Wine Stains, hemangiomas, and fine vessels (also known as telangiectasias) can be treated with the Perfecta Laser. Scars, wrinkles, and even acne also respond well to this laser.

Brown lesions such as freckles and certain superficial brown keratoses can be treated with a special hand piece that presses out the red from blood vessels, so that pigmented cells called melanocytes can absorb the energy.

Finally, the Perfecta Laser can treat sun spots (actinic keratoses), photodamaged areas, and benign tumors of the skin such as syringomas and sebaceous glands. This process can be enhanced with the topical application of other absorbers of laser light such as ALA (Aminolevulinic Acid), which is called Photodynamic Therapy.

By adjusting the time that the energy is delivered from short to long pulses, a cosmetic dose without bruising can be achieved. Conversely, by using very short pulses, a more aggressive approach can be used; lesions can be cleared quicker, but there will be more bruising or purpura. There is minimal pain with this laser since a cooling spray is applied before each laser pulse. The cooling spray also protects the skin from the heat of the light energy.

Q-Switched Ruby Laser

Pigmented lesions are all made of an overabundance of melanosomes in the skin. Tattoos are formed by injections of ink into the skin. The Spectrum RD 1200 Q-Switched Ruby Laser emits a short pulse of intense red light that is selectively absorbed by melanin or tattoo ink located in the epidermal and dermal skin layers. The laser energy causes the melanin or tattoo ink to fragment into smaller pigment particles that are removed by your body’s immune system.

The Ruby Laser can significantly lighten or remove unwanted brown spots usually in 1-2 treatments and tattoo ink in a series of treatments. This laser is safe and effective, and although you may choose to have anesthesia, it is usually not necessary. There is a low risk for scaring and temporary skin discoloration.

Q-Switched Nd: Yag Laser

The Continuum Biomedical Nd: Yag Laser offers four wavelengths to treat tattoo ink. This enables the provider to treat hard to get colors like red, yellow and blue. It can significantly lighten or remove unwanted tattoo ink in a series of treatments. It also offers a safe and effective method for temporary hair removal of dark hair. It is a relatively fast and comfortable treatment method to delay hair growth for several months with one treatment. This laser is also effective to remove some benign pigmented growths common on the face.

StarLux IPL System

The Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) System by Palomar is used for the removal of pigmented and vascular lesions, and is also an effective hair removal device. The IPL can break up the pigment in brown lesions, as well as blue, red or purple veins under the skin, making it a great choice for skin rejuvenation. The IPL device is also designed to cover a wider area of skin, and therefore works faster than traditional laser which means less downtime for patients. After treatment, patients can expect some reddening and/or darkening of the of the treated lesions with clearing in 10-14 days. The Max G handpiece targets collagen , brown spots and red telangiectasias. It can rejuvenate the face, a process called a photo-facial. This device can also activate ALA and produce photodynamic therapy for scars, Sebaceous hyperplasia and acne.

As a hair removal system, the IPL works by emitting pulses or intense light into the hair follicles. This light is absorbed by the hair follicle and converted to heat, which ultimately prevents new hair from regrowing. This treatment is unique as it can be used to remove hair anywhere except for around the eyes. Patients can expect to have mild redness and tenderness in the treated area.

Thermage by Solta Medical

The Thermage is a radio frequency device used to deliver heat volumetrically to tissue for tightening and treatment of deep wrinkles. The tips are cooled after the energy is delivered to minimize tissue injury and help with pain. A variety of tips are available for specific target areas such as the face, abdomen and extremities.

Each treatment consists of several passes over the entire area, with additional passes over vectors to produce more tightening. Up to 2 to 4 inches of tissue tightening can be seen after a single treatment on the waist or hips. The treatments are safe, effective and have little to no down time. Oral analgesia is often needed to help alleviate the discomfort during the procedure.

There are tips for treatment of the eyelids with good results replacing traditional surgery.

XTRAC Excimer Laser

The XTRAC Excimer Laser offers a revolutionary treatment for patients suffering from localized mild to moderate plaque psoriasis. This laser uses a carefully focused beam of light delivered through a sophisticated fiber optic device. The XTRAC system allows the practitioner to use high doses of ultraviolet (UVB) light necessary for fast, effective treatment of the psoriasis plaques while minimizing the risk of exposure to healthy skin. Patients can often see improvement in their psoriasis plaques in approximately 10-12 treatment sessions. Remissions are expected to last months.

This laser is also FDA approved for the treatment of white patches of vitiligo. The Excimer Laser concentrates light only to the affected area stimulating melanocytes to help repigment the area without exposing healthy skin. Some success has also been published in the repigmentation of scars.
